About Nebraska Repertory Theatre

Nebraska Repertory Theatre creates innovative theatrical experiences to ignite the imagination, challenge the heart, promote an inclusive community, and inspire the next generation of theatre artists.

In 1968, Dallas S. Williams in concert with the rest of the Theatre Arts faculty at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Stephan R. Cole, Joseph B. Baldwin, Jerry Lewis and William Rhea Morgan, decided to take the first step toward establishing a resident professional theatre in Lincoln by founding the Nebraska Repertory Theatre.

This trend of producing plays "a cut above" the university's academic season continued until 1988, when Executive Director Tice L. Miller and Artistic Director Robert Hall envisioned the development of a fully professional theatre. They subsequently forged a relationship with Actors' Equity Association, the professional actors' union. The signing of the Equity contract in 1988 meant Nebraska Rep's already high quality was assured of consistent excellence.

In 2014, Artistic Director Virginia Smith stepped down after ten seasons in the position. This prompted senior leadership to engage in a period of reflection and evaluation to realize a greater impact on the community and the students of the University of Nebraska. From this came the development of a bold, new direction that expands the theatre's reach and serves the community in exciting new ways.

After a national search, current Artistic Director, Andy Park, was hired, beginning his tenure in January 2017. In September 2017, the Nebraska Rep relaunched as a year-round regional professional Equity theatre company.

Today, Nebraska Repertory Theatre stands as the state's only professional regional theater and serves Nebraska by producing critically acclaimed productions by both emerging and established playwrights.
